@Natalie
Beautiful they are, although they prefer to keep their distance, so whilst they are easy to handle they're not too keen on cuddling, at least by humans.
The fleece isn't seasonal - it's shorn early summer and then just grows until the next shearing, getting heavier when the weather is colder.
The colour stays the same all year round apart from when they have been rolling around in the dust of course!

Gosh, they look absolutely beautiful huddled together in their inner quarters, really cuddly in fact. Do alpacas have seasonal coats or do they stay the same all year round?

I can just imagine Silky (that is Silky poking his head round the corner, right?) saying "Waiter - the canapés please!"

Stay safe down there. It's mostly cleared up here in Aberystwyth, but there's still patches of ice in those spots that the sun never gets to.

Dad's birthday - yes, that was a bit painful, but there is a big family do next weekend, so that'll make up for it.

Summer work / winter rewards - absolutely! It was good in the summer, but sheer magic the other day. We're not quite out of the woods here yet in terms of accessibility, but by next winter we will be (he says determinedly)!

Thanks, Dan! I'm a big fan of worsted-spun yarns - probably comes from my weaving bias as I love yarns that show off weave structures. They give great stitch definition in knitting, too, although the lesser amount of elasticity seems more problematic.

As for the fineness, well, this is about as fine as I like to go - around 20wpi - because when it gets finer than that, I start losing my connection with the yarn. I just don't 'get' those superfine yarns in some way, I like a beefier yarn that is (arguably) clearly what it is in terms os fibre. Some 30wpi yarns I've seen could be anything - wool, alpaca, nylon - and it seems that the beauty of the yarn is then in the fineness, rather than in the fibre. I've no argument with that beauty, it just doesn't resonate with me. So I don't spin that fine because I don't really 'get' it, and it would almost certainly impact on my yarn.

We still use that 'old' system in Britain! All our commercial yarns are labelled with 2-ply/3-ply/4-ply/Light DK/DK/Aran, and knitters and crocheters will use that system. Weavers generally use a different system. Certainly where I am in Wales, if I referred to a yarn as 'fingering' weight, for example, I'd be met with blank stares!

Your spinning is beautiful and smooth. And I'm jealous of your fineness.

::cocks head:: If there are only two singles in the yarn, it's a two-ply, even if it's chunky weight. 3-ply is 3 singles, plied, etc.

Some commercial yarn companies use ply to indicate size because they only spin a one size single, so adding a ply increases the size of the yarn by a predicatable amount. And there is, apparently, an old british system based on this, but I don't think many people use it anymore.

At 20wpi you're in the "lace" size category.

Thanks! Yup, that's what I've been thinking of, too. Or maybe a cowl - it's certainly cosy enough and I don't find the Gotland itchy at all. In many ways, I hate putting stuff on the shop pages - I want to use it!

Thanks, Ingrid! Yup, I'm playing with slow-gradation in yarn at the moment. I'm lucky enough to have a wide range of natural alpaca colours - light fawns through to black - and it's fun blending and spinning just for playing's sake. I'll post more on the yarn shortly!

I love the colour of the yew bark yarn, even if it wasn't what you were actually going for. As for the slow-graduation of colours, in my opinion there aren't enough yarns like that. Definitely not enough good quality ones. Looking forward to seeing how it crochets up.
